The Mechanic

Keep It Growing.” Secondary Role: Mechanic / Equipment & Vehicle Maintenance — Keeps the Flavor Crew’s aircraft, vehicles, machinery, and field equipment mission-ready. She also tends the crew’s garden, growing herbs and produce whenever their location allows.
Personality: Strong, practical, resourceful, loyal, and quietly nurturing. Betty is the crew’s resident fixer and unofficial mother hen. She’s more comfortable showing she cares by repairing something, handing you a cup of coffee, or simply sitting beside you than talking about feelings. Growing up an only child made her fiercely independent; finding the Flavor Crew gave her the sisters she never had. When something—or someone—needs tending, Betty is already there.
“I can fix that.”
Boom Boom Betty learned early that if something was broken, you didn’t throw it away. You figured out how it worked and fixed it.
An only child raised in Northern California, Betty spent more of her childhood underneath an old pickup truck than playing with dolls.
Her father was a mechanic—the kind of man who could diagnose an engine by the sound it made coming up the driveway. With no son following him around the garage, he took his daughter under his wing instead. And Betty couldn’t have been happier.
While the other girls on the block were playing house, Betty was lying on a creeper beside her dad, handing him socket wrenches, sorting bolts into coffee cans and learning the difference between something that was truly broken and something that just needed a little persuasion.
By the time she was old enough to reach the pedals, she already understood what was happening underneath them.
But Betty’s childhood wasn’t spent entirely in the garage.
Her mother had a different kind of workshop. The garden.
If Dad taught Betty how to keep machines running, Mom taught her how to make things grow.
Rosemary bushes lined the garden. Garlic came out of the soil by the handful. Vegetables were planted, tended and harvested according to the seasons. Betty learned that dirt under your fingernails could come from rebuilding a carburetor in the morning and pulling vegetables from the ground that afternoon.
Those two worlds shaped her. Steel and soil. Engines and gardens. Grease and rosemary.
Years later, when Betty developed her signature popcorn flavor, she didn’t have to look far for inspiration.
She went home.
VICTORY GARDEN
Rosemary. Garlic. Sea salt.
Simple ingredients rooted in the gardens she grew up around and inspired by the Victory Gardens that once turned American backyards into a part of the war effort.
To Betty, Victory Garden isn’t just a flavor. It’s a memory.
It’s her mother’s hands brushing dirt from freshly harvested garlic.
It’s rosemary growing along the edge of the yard.
It’s her father’s battered toolbox sitting twenty feet away in the garage.
And it’s the smell of dinner drifting outside after a long day of getting something running again.
FINDING THE FLAVOR CREW
Betty never had brothers or sisters.
Growing up, she never thought much about it. Dad had the garage. Mom had the garden. Betty had both.
She was independent because she had to be.
Then she found the Flavor Crew.
At first, Betty treated the squadron the same way she treated one of her father’s engines: stand back, listen carefully and figure out how all the pieces fit together.
Before long, something unexpected happened.
For the first time in her life, Betty had sisters.
Not the quiet, tea-party kind she’d avoided as a kid.
These women were loud. Stubborn. Fearless. Occasionally infuriating.
In other words, they were perfect.
Betty became the one who keeps them—and practically everything they own—running.
When a vehicle won’t start, they call Betty.
When equipment jams, they call Betty.
When something starts making a noise it definitely shouldn’t be making, Betty is already reaching for her toolbox.
And when one of the women needs someone beside her without having to explain why?
Betty is usually there for that too.
She may grumble while doing it. But she’s there.
HER PLACE IN THE SQUADRON
Boom Boom Betty is the mechanical backbone of the Flavor Crew.
She maintains the squadron’s vehicles, machinery, field equipment and anything else containing gears, pistons, wires, hydraulics—or enough loose parts that everyone else has wisely decided not to touch it.
She’s practical, resourceful and almost impossible to rattle.
Betty doesn’t need the newest equipment.
Give her a toolbox, some scrap metal and enough time, and she’ll probably build something better.
Her philosophy is simple:
Take care of your equipment.
Take care of the land.
Take care of your people.
Everything else can usually be fixed with the right wrench.
PERSONALITY
Betty is warm but tough, mechanically brilliant and relentlessly practical.
She has little patience for unnecessary drama, but enormous patience for people she cares about.
Her humor is dry. Her loyalty is absolute.
She’s perfectly comfortable covered in grease, kneeling in a garden or sitting around a table after a mission listening to the other women argue.
And somewhere along the way, the only child who never thought she needed sisters became fiercely protective of the ones she finally found.
She would never actually tell them that, of course.
She’d probably just change the subject and ask somebody to hand her a 9/16 socket.
